Upcoming Contract Negotiations and Strike Authorization Vote

In addition to our ongoing healthcare negotiations, soon we will begin bargaining with the University of California for our sixth contract. As we approach the upcoming negotiations, we will once again be holding a vote on each campus to ratify our initial demands and to authorize the bargaining committee to call a strike in the event that circumstances justify (for example, the university commits unfair labor practices or we reach the end of the impasse process).

Under our constitution and bylaws, members must vote in order for the bargaining committee to have the authority to call a strike.  The bargaining committee is comprised of two elected leaders from each campus; these leaders have worked as academic student employees at the UC and/or are members of our local. It's critical that we have a good turnout and a strong “yes” vote on both the initial demands and strike authorization to signal to UC that the bargaining committee has a strong mandate from our membership.

As bargaining progresses, the bargaining committee will update you on how negotiations are going and keep you informed of any circumstances that might precipitate the need to call a strike.

All members are encouraged to vote. Only union members may vote in the election. Membership may be obtained at the polls.
