In a recent discussion of the Joint Council of our local, we decided to step up as a union in the campaigns to defend public education and against austerity in the State of California. We are doing this organizing through cross-sectoral work in our campus as well as statewide, building coalitions with the other UC unions, the UC Student Association, with grassroots student and worker organizations, and at the State level with other public sector unions and community organizations.
UAW 2865 is part of the ReFund California coalition. Allied organizations can endorse the ReFund California Coalition’s week of action by filling out this endorsement form.
With all these forces we are in the planning stages for mass actions on our campuses for the week of Nov 9th. The date has been chosen to anticipate the upcoming Regents Meeting of Nov 15th and 17th and give the Regents time to consider our demands before their meeting. We will demand that they reverse the decisions they have made (and the ones that they plan to make) that hurt UC students and workers, as well as the people of California at large.
From today to Nov 9th 2011, we will organize as many educational events as possible, in our academic departments and campus wide, to engage in broad conversation with our rank-and-file members, discussing the impact of the cuts and fee hikes as well as necessary alternatives at both the UC and State level. Please join us. Bring all your ideas and energy!
