UAW 2865 Resolution in Support of the CNTE and the Teachers in Mexico

UAW 2865 stands in solidarity with teachers in Oaxaca, Mexico, currently fighting privatization and neoliberal education reforms. Below is the resolution in support of the CNTE, in full:

Whereas the CNTE (National Coordination of Education Workers) in Mexico has been fighting against anti-public education reform which includes a new evaluation system that erodes the labour rights of teachers and does not guarantee the quality of education, and;

Whereas this top-down and corporate system of evaluation and standardized testing has proven to be a failure in the United States (e.g., No Child Left Behind 2001-2015, Every Student Succeeds Act 2015-2016), pitting schools districts, students, and teachers against each other in competition for ever- decreasing funding, and;

Whereas despite the numerous appeals to dialogue and negotiation coming from the CNTE, the government has decided to impose by any means necessary this education reform without the consent of the teachers and their labor federation, and;

Whereas while the CNTE has been organizing labor actions, with the support of the students, parents, and the community for the last several years, the struggle has intensified these last months of May and June in Oaxaca, Chiapas, Michoacán, Veracruz, and Tabasco, and;

Whereas on June 10th and 11th 2016, two major union leaders of the section 22nd of the teachers union (CNTE), Francisco Villalobos (executive director of organizing) and Rubén Núñez (general secretary), were illegally arrested by police commandos in Oaxaca and Mexico City and are still being held in jail under false charges, and;

Whereas on June 19th 2016, the federal police attacked with military equipment the teachers and students in struggle in Nochixtlán, Oaxaca, leaving at least 12 people dead, more than 20 disappeared, and more than 60 wounded by gunfire; therefore

Let it be resolved that we stand in full solidarity with the CNTE teachers in struggle against the education reform as we too, as a union of academic workers and labor activists, are committed to a free, quality public education where labor rights are respected, and;

Let it be further resolved that we demand the government of Peña Nieto to immediately release Rubén Núñez and Francisco Villalobos and any other labor activists who have been imprisoned in the course of the union struggle against this oppressive labor reform;

Let it be further resolved that we demand the Obama administration immediately suspend the Merida Initiative (also known as “Plan Mexico”) which provides military equipment and training to the Mexican state that is used to attack civilians, unions activists, and community members in their rightful struggle for their social rights and to suppress civil liberties in Mexico.
