UAW Local 2865, the graduate student-workers union, is the union for 18,000 Tutors, Readers, Graduate Student Instructors and Teaching Assistants at the University of California. All graduate students, regardless of citizenship or field of study, are eligible to join the union by signing a membership card. Undergraduate Tutors and TAs can join too.
WHAT DOES UAW LOCAL 2865 DO?
(1) Negotiate and enforce the contracts with the university that protect student workers.
(2) Organize to defend public education. For example, action taken by our union members was key to reversing the Trump administration’s proposed tax on graduate student fee remissions.
(3) Build community and create solidarity. As Audre Lorde writes, “Without community, there is no liberation.” Our union sees itself as part of a broader movement for justice, understanding that an injury to one is truly an injury to all.
The Union works through the participation of its members. Contact your local campus office to find out how you can get involved!
